Recent Paintings Out of Burma & India

This exhibition brings together the work of the last two years. During that time Caroline Romer travelled to Burma in 2010 and to India in 2012. These journeys are central to the exhibition.

BURMA Romer visited Burma in the winter of 2010 . A deeply moving experience to see the people of such a large, fertile and culturally rich country living and suffering in silence, where even the markets were subdued. She returned feeling that my sketches and the paintings that followed would be heavy with the oppression of the Burmese people. However, that is changing and Aung San Suu Kyi is freed and the country is interacting with the rest of the world. Romer’s paintings illustrate and share in the hope for Burma’s future.

INDIA Romer has visited India often , it draws her close as it does to many artists and painters of the West. It is a constant festival of colour to the eye. She was 19 when she first went there and ever since she has returned whenever the opportunity became possible. This last, most recent visit, was to Mumbai and Gujarat and further east to Kutch and the Great Rann of Kutch where the land becomes salt a vast plain of salt to the horizon. Kutch is a desert land with little vegetation inhabited by many tribes each identifiable by their remarkable dress. The paintings from this journey record the people mostly in their surroundings.

Caroline Romer was born 1955 in Hertfordshire. She trained at the Cambridge College of Art and Technology and at the Byam Shaw in London. She then lived and worked in the Cataln Pyrnees for 31 years, from 1980 to 2011, before moving to the village of Littlebury, Essex. Caroline Romer regularly exhibits in London, Barcelona and the Pyrenees.
